Cal Poly Dance Team

FAQs

Some frequently asked questions about the dance team...

  • How big of a commitment is dance team?

We typically have 2 hour practices 3 times a week.  During fall quarter we attend the football games every Saturday. During winter quarter we attend 2 basketball games per week, one men's and one women's.  On average, each dancer dedicates 11 hours a week to practices and games. This does not include traveling to away games.  We expect each dancer to make dance team a top priority.  School comes first, ofcourse.

  • When does dance team start?

During the summer all new members receive a DVD with all the cheers and band dances on them. Members must learn these dances BEFORE our first practice. We start practicing 2 weeks before WOW week.

  • How much does it cost to be on dance team?

At Cal Poly we are fortunate to be completely funded by the Athletic Department. We do not have to pay for uniforms, costumes, shoes, poms, travel expenses, etc. We do ask that each member pays for our mandatory UDA camp in the summer. This costs $225.

  • What is required to be apart of dance team?

We require:

  • solid double pirouettes
  • high kicks
  • jazz training
  • hip hop experience
  • strong arm motions
  • outstanding performance ability
  • What is the team's dance style?

We focus on jazz and hip hop.  You will see us do a bit more hip hop than jazz because it is more crowd appealing.  However, we also do perform higher energy jazz routines during basketballl season.

  • Do you have to have a certain look to be on the dance team?

We definitelty DO NOT evaluate dance team prospectives on appearance.  We look for strong, versatile dancers with outstanding performing ability!

  • What kind of uniform does dance team wear?

The uniforms are constantly changing.  During games, we always wear jazz pants as bottoms.  Our tops are form fitting halters or something along those lines.  Halftime routine costumes depend on the routine and music.

  • What should I bring to auditions?

You should bring:

  • Jazz shoes/sneakers ( we will be doing both jazz and hip hop routines)
  • Water!---> we are going to work you out!
  • Wear comfortable clothes that wont restrict movement!
  • What should I expect at auditions?

The first day you will be learning a short jazz routine, a short hip hop routine, a sideline routine, and a cheer. The second day is the actual tryout.  You will be evaluated in random pairs on the material you learned on Day 1.  Results will be posted by the end of the day.

Tip: On the day of actual tryouts you may want to put some makeup on and style your hair.  Not too extreme, but just look presentable. =)

  • How many girls are you taking this year?

There will be 12 girls on dance team.  In order to secure a permanent spot on the team, dancers must make tryouts 2 years in a row.

  • How many girls usually try out?

The number of girls vary each year.  Last season 55 dancers came out to tryouts.  Our turn out has been increasing over the years.

  • What is the difference between the Cal Poly Dance Team and Orchesis?

Orchesis is the dance company on campus that puts on one show during the year.  Their style is focuses on mostly ballet, modern, and lyrical. This organization is more concert dance.  The Cal Poly Dance Team speicalizes in jazz and hip hop.  Because we attend so many athletic events, we perform much more often.
